This tool can be used only for the TEAC CD-W540E. Note that this tool will not operate with other drives regardless of whether they are manufactured by TEAC or other companies. The CD-W540E is shipped with the standard settings that allow the maximum functions and performances under almost all the using conditions. This tool is for customizing these standard settings according to the using conditions or preferences of various users. Note that the desired effect may not be obtained depending on your using environment. Refer to 4. Descriptions of functions for items whose settings can be changed and of each function. These settings can be restored to default settings easily. ======================== 2. Operating environment ======================== ----------------- 2.1 Compatible PC ----------------- PC-AT machines and compatibles ----------------- 2.2 Compatible OS ----------------- Windows 98 Windows 98 Second Edition Windows Me Windows 2000 Windows XP ----------------- 2.3 Support drive ----------------- CD-W540E TEAC standard (CD-W540E-000, 002, 085, etc.) (The OEM version drive incorporated in a PC manufactured by PC makers will not operate.) * Refer to 4.1 Target drive in the case when multiple CD-W540E drives are connected. ======== 3. Usage ======== -------------- 3.1 Installing -------------- This software is contained in a self-extracted file called TuningW540E.exe. When this file is extracted, a folder called TuningW540 is generated and the following files are contained in the folder. TOOLW540E.exe Executable file TOOLW540E.dll Dynamic-Link Library file README_E.txt This file README_J.txt Japanese Readme file Run the TOOLW540E.exe to make the tuning for the CD-W540E. ---------- 3.2 Tuning ---------- (1) Read 4. Description of functions to select an item. (2) Press Cancel to suspend the tuning and terminate the application. Press Apply to save the changed contents selected with the application opened. Press OK to save the changed contents selected and close the application. (3) Press Default to restore the default settings of the CD-W540E. The default settings of each function are as follows: Maximum Write Speed: Quality Mode (40X/ 12X for registered disc) CD-R (4X) Strategy: Normal Read Speed: 48X Listening Mode (8X): UNCHECKED UDMA Setting: Enable (4) Restarting the computer may be required depending on the item changed. In such case, be sure to restart the computer before proceeding to the next operation. * The timing when the setting change becomes effective is as follows. Maximum Write Speed: After the disc is inserted CD-R (4X) Strategy: After the disc is inserted Read Speed: Immediately after a change is applied Listening Mode (8X): Immediately after the a change is applied UDMA Setting: After the computer is restarted --------------------------------------- 3.3 Precautions during tuning operation --------------------------------------- * Be sure to terminate all other applications before running this software. Also take the media out of the drive before running this software. * Do not turn off the power of the computer during tuning. * Do not start other programs during tuning. * Run this software under administrator privileges in Windows XP or Windows 2000. ============================ 4. Descriptions of functions ============================ ---------------- 4.1 Target drive ---------------- This tool is for the TEAC CD-W540E only. The target drive indication represents the following. In the case of for example: D: Drive letter TEAC CD-W540E: Drive name 1.0E: Firmware revision [0 : 0]: Refer to the following note. * This indication may change depending on the user's environment. * The number of drives allowed to connect is as follows. One drive under Windows 98, 98SE or Me Up to two drives under Windows 2000 or XP * When multiple drives are connected, each drive will be tuned one by one. Restarting the computer will be required for tuning another drive. * The symbols in [n : n] indicates the adapter ID and the target ID according to the concept of the ASPI Manager in Windows 98, 98SE or Windows Me. [0 : 0] is always indicated in Windows 2000 or Windows XP as the ASPI Manager is not used. ----------------------- 4.2 Maximum Write Speed ----------------------- The CD-W540E can write data at a maximum speed of 40X for the CD-R media and at a maximum speed of 12X for the Hi-Speed CD-RW media. The drive incorporates an Intelligent Speed Control function that allows stable write quality at all times. With this, write speed can be automatically adjusted for some of the media whose writing strategy has not been registered in the drive firmware or the media in which sufficient write quality cannot be obtained with write made at the maximum speed. When using media that is not registered in the firmware such as a media conforming to high-speed write that will be newly released in the market, write at the maximum speed can be selected by using the Speed Priority mode. However, note in that case, write on all media will be performed at the maximum speed even on the media on which write at the maximum speed is not recommended. The Intelligent Speed Control function operates to automatically select the optimum maximum write speed for each media. Part of the Intelligent Speed Control function is cancelled to allow the user to select the maximum speed during write for all the CD-R media and Hi-Speed CD-RW media. * Write Quality Priority mode is set by default. * Note that the write quality may deteriorate depending on the media. * When a disc having deteriorated mechanical characteristics is inserted into the drive, the write speed may be reduced according to the judgment of the drive in either mode. ---------------------- 4.3 CD-R (4X) strategy ---------------------- The write state will be changed by varying the laser power and its radiation duration of the drive. As a result, the sound quality or read performance may fluctuate depending on the congeniality of the media and the drive. The change may work better or worse. It is impossible for TEAC to make a verification as it depends on the congeniality of the media and the drive. Changing the settings is your own responsibility. These settings function only for the CD-R media and only when the write setting is 4X speed. Set the write speed to 4X using a writing application. Default settings adjusted by TEAC The media is written with stronger laser emission in a lesser time than those of the normal settings. * Normal is selected in the default settings. * Note in advance that some effects may not be noticeable or a side effect such as increasing errors may result when Boost is selected. -------------- 4.4 Read speed -------------- 4.4.1 Maximum speed The CD-W540E can read data with a maximum speed of 48X. Although the drive is equipped with a sufficient anti-noise measure, it is possible to reduce the rotational noise of the disc by reducing the maximum read speed to 40X if the user wants a more quiet environment. * 48X is set in the default settings. 4.4.2 Listening mode (8X) When this is checked, all the media is read with 8x speed for quietness. When the computer is restarted, this setting becomes invalid and is restored automatically to the speed set in the read speed. ---------------- 4.5 UDMA setting ---------------- The transfer mode is set to UDMA in the default settings of the CD-W540E. When this is disabled, Multiword DMA will be set. When the UDMA setting is changed, restarting the computer is required. * When the default settings are selected, the UDMA becomes valid. In this case also, restarting the computer is required. ======================================== 5.
