[TEAC Firmware Updater for the CD-W524E Ver.1.2.0.0 Instruction Manual]
UpdaterW524E.exe is a program to update the firmware of the TEAC CD-W524E.
This program is exclusively for the CD-W524E with firmware
revision 1.0A/B/C/D . Please note that this program cannot be executed
except for this specific firmware revision.
IMPORTANT:
Use this software on your own responsibility after agreeing to the
software licensing agreement displayed on the download page or
displayed when this software is started.
Precaution:
Please read the Licensing Agreement displayed when executing
UpdaterW524E.exe carefully. If you do not agree with it, press Exit
button to exit this program.
It is recommended that you backup important data or the system before
executing this program.
We take no responsibility for any trouble caused by using this program
(details are described in the Licensing Agreement). If you do not agree
with these precautions, do not execute this program.
It is very risky to use the PC without restarting it even after
completing the update normally. Restart the system immediately.

3. Precautions in executing this program
3-0. If the drive that you are using has F/W 1.0A/B/C, please update
to 1.0D first and continue to update to 1.0E by following the
instruction below.
If your drive F/W version is 1.0A/B/C, the Updater will update
the F/W to 1.0D. After updating the F/W to 1.0D, reboot your PC
and execute the Updater again.?@Then the F/W will be updated
to 1.0E. If your drive F/W version is 1.0D, the Updater will
update the F/W to 1.0E. The F/W version will be displayed when
you launch this Updater (Update program) as shown in figure
attached.
Please use FWUPW524E01.EXE in this Home Page to update to 1.0C.
Please use FWUPW524E02.EXE in this Home Page to update to 1.0D.
3-1. Restarting windows may take time after executing this program.
3-2. Do not execute this program while the tray of the drive to be
updated is ejected.
Also do not eject the tray after starting the program.
NEVER turn off the power of your PC or drive while executing the
program.
Likewise, do not force termination of the OS, terminate a task,
nor insert or eject any media into or out of the drive while
executing the program. Exit all the active applications beforehand.
3-3. How you can avoid the failure of firmware update
You may fail in updating the firmware depending on the type of
Chip set used in your PC. If you see the message, " NG Sync
Flash ....... Sense Data = 5:26:02. Firmware update is Failed.",

Please change the transfer mode from DMA to PIO following the
instruction shown below.
« For Windows XP, Windows 2000 »
(1) [For Windows XP], double-click 'My Computer' if it is displayed
on the 'desk top'. If 'My Computer' is not displayed, click
'Start' button and display 'My Computer'.
(2) [For Windows XP], click 'View system information' in the
'System Tasks' from 'My Computer' window.
[For Windows 2000], select 'System Properties' by right-clicking on the
'My Computer' window.
(Note: If OS is not specified, the item is applied to both OS.)
(3) Click 'Hardware' tab in 'System Properties' dialog and click 'Device Manager'.
(4) Click '+' which is located at the left side of 'IDE ATE/ATAPI
Controllers' icon to display Secondary IDE channel and Primary IDE
Channel. Double-click 'Secondary (or Primary) IDE channel' icon
that TEAC CD-W524E is connected and display the properties of IDE channel.
(If you are not sure of the Channel CD-W524E is connected, end
this procedure following the item (6) and below.
(5) Click 'Advanved Settings' tab and change the transfer mode of the
Device '0' or Device '1' whichever CD-W524E is connected by
changing the setting of 'Transfer Mode ' from ' DMA if available'
to 'PIO Only'. Then Click 'OK' button to close.
[For Windows 2000], The message of 'Your hardware settings have
been changed. You must restart your computer for these changes
to take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now ?'
will appears. Select 'Yes'.
[For Windows XP], follow the procedure shown below.
(6) Close 'Device Manager' after 'Advanced Settings' is completed.
(7) Close 'System Properties'.
(8) Close 'My Computer'.
(9) Restart Windows.
[NOTE]: After update is successfully completed,
Follow the above procedure and at the step (5), change the setting of 'Transfer
Mode (T)' from 'PIO' to 'DMA(if available)'. Then Click 'OK' button to
close.

(1) Click the 'Start' button and select 'Settings' -> Control Panel.
(2) Double-click the 'System' icon on the Control Panel window.
(3) Click the 'Device Manager' tab in the 'System Properties' dialog.
(4) Click '+' to the left of the 'CD-ROM' icon to display the
connected CD-ROM drives. Double-click the 'TEAC CD-W524E' icon
to display the Properties.
(5) Click the 'Settings' tab and uncheck the box for 'Option' and
'DMA'. Click the 'OK' button to close.
(6) Click the 'OK' button to close 'System Properties'.
(7) Restart Windows.
[NOTE]: After update is successfully completed, Follow the above
procedure and at the step (5), change the setting of
'Transfer Mode (T)'from 'PIO' to 'DMA(if available)'.
Then Click 'OK' button to close.
3-4. About the setting of Automatic Insertion
When Automatic Insertion of the CD-W524E or the drive connected
to the same channel as the CD-W524E is enabled, firmware update
may fail.
First, disable Automatic Insertion using the following procedure
in order to update the firmware.
(1) Click the 'Start' button and select 'Settings' -> 'Control Panel'.
(2) Double-click the 'System' icon on the Control Panel window.
(3) Click the 'Device Manager' tab in the 'System Properties' dialog.
(4) Click '+' to the left of the 'CD-ROM' icon to display the
connected CD-ROM drives. Double-click the 'TEAC CD-W524E' icon
to display the property.
(5) Click the 'Settings' tab and uncheck the box for 'Options' and
'Auto insert notification'. Click the 'OK' button to close.
(6) Click the 'OK' button to close 'System Properties'.
(7) Restart Windows.
3-5. When the functions of some packet write software for CD-R/RW made
by other makers are enabled, firmware update may not be executed
normally.
In that case, start this program after disabling the functions
of the packet write software.
4. Operating procedure
4-1. Eject any media in the CD-W524E before executing the program.
4-2. The downloaded file (FWUPW524E01.EXE / FWUPW524E02.EXE) is a
self-extracting file.
When this file is extracted, the folder FW_UP_W524E will be
generated.
4-3. Execute UpdaterW524E.exe in the FW_UP_W524E folder. Read carefully
the Licensing Agreement displayed after starting the program.
If you agree with it, press the Accept button. If you do not
agree, press the Exit button to exit the program.
4-4. The target drive will be indicated in the Target Drive list box.
Read carefully the precautions on the screen. When you press the
Update button, the message dialog that prompts further
confirmation will appear. Press Yes to start the firmware
rewriting process.
Precaution:
NEVER turn off the power of your PC or drive while executing the
program.

4-5. When the firmware update is completed normally, the message
asking you if you want to restart the system will appear.
Press OK to restart. (* It may take some time to restart the
system.) When you continue operation without restarting, your
PC may become unstable or the system may hang up. Therefore,
be sure to restart.
